About the Item

Rare and impressive work of sculptural art. An impressive Italian neoclassical terracotta vase, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, inspired by ancient Greek vase painting and produced for the European Grand Tour and decorative market. The vase is decorated with a continuous hand-painted frieze depicting classical and mythological scenes, including galloping horses, chariots, winged figures and sphinxes. Rendered in rich earth tones, terracotta red, ochre, black and gilt, the decoration reflects the refined aesthetic of the Neoclassical Revival. The elegant baluster form with flared neck and tapered foot is characteristic of Italian workshop production from this period, likely originating from Florence, Rome or Naples. A geometric ornamental band encircles the neck, while the lower section features a bold black triangular motif. The underside is stamped “Mod. 107”, a model number consistent with atelier production. Our fair price for this striking and highly decorative antique vase even includes perfect packing (in a custom made box) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 5 days. Maximum height x diameter: 21.4 x 10.7 inches. Good antique condition, with age-appropriate wear, minor surface abrasions and small losses; structurally sound. We are driven by a passion for uniqueness, timeless, quality, stylish design, and the enduring craftsmanship of the past. Large Glazed Greek Terracotta Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive large Greek style vase, intricately crafted in terracotta and applied with a vibrant treacle glaze. Shaped like a trophy, this mid 19th century urn shares similarities with the marble vase attributed to prominent 2nd century Greek sculptor Sosibios in terms of shape and style, detailed with unique handles shaped like a swans neck. Unlike the Sosibios vase, the heart of this terracotta vase is largely plain showcasing the beautiful tone variation and lustre of the glaze. To the top, the vase is more intricate, detailed with a section of leaves and berries and stands on a socle carved with leaves to match the lower portion of the vase’s body. Thanks to its large scale and beautiful colour, this Greek style terracotta vase makes a striking statement piece placed on a pedestal or at the centre of a large sideboard...
