About the Item

A very stylish early Art Deco art pottery vase decorated with stylized patterning by James Plant of Hanley and dating from around 1915. The pottery produced a range of vases of varying shape using this pattern which we believe was probably inspired by the Dutch Potters from Gouda. The lightly potted vase is of conical form with a wide round base and a narrow round neck and small fold back opening. The hand-crafted vase is painted in matted but bold contrasting tones of green, orange, blue and red on a cream ground with the underlying glaze forming highlights within the design. The vase is hand-painted with stylized foliage and abstract designs repeated around the body and with a solid green painted border around the base and top of the vase. The vase is signed Jas Plant Hanley to the cream glazed base. Provenance: acquired from the British Art market. In good condition.
