About the Item

This is an old Japanese ceramic jar covered with layers of traditional paper (washi). It was made during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s) and was originally used for storing and transporting tea leaves. On its body remains an old paper label reading “番茶” (a type of coarse green tea), quietly evoking scenes of everyday life from that era. The surface of the jar is covered with multiple layers of washi to protect its contents from moisture, and then finished with a black lacquer coating. Over time, parts of the paper have peeled away, revealing the raw clay beneath and the delicate texture of the paper fibers. This natural transformation has created an abstract, painterly beauty—an unintentional yet profound expression of wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic that finds grace in imperfection and transience. The thick, rounded body of the jar gives it a grounded and commanding presence. Although it cannot hold water directly, it can be beautifully adapted for use as a flower vessel by placing an inner container inside. It also stands powerfully on its own as an object of art—balancing the atmosphere of any space with its quiet weight and historical depth. A piece that transcends time, embodying both the enduring strength of its materials and the poetic beauty born from age and decay. Mouth diameter: approx. 260 mm Weight: 21.5 kg ___________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
