About the Item

This is an antique Japanese iron container, believed to have been made in the Meiji to Taishō period (1860s–1920s). It is one of the few surviving iron vessels from that era, now considered quite rare. In Japan at the time, iron was a highly valuable resource and used only when truly necessary, making the survival of such a large iron container exceptionally remarkable. Its original purpose is not entirely clear, but traces such as the slight distortions in the body, the visible seams, and the heat-marked interior all speak to the skilled craftsmanship involved. One can sense the process: repeatedly heating, hammering, shaping, and refining the iron plate by hand. These marks remain on the surface, giving the piece a quiet and compelling presence. The rusted patina that covers the entire vessel is beautifully expressive. The naturally formed variations in color create a depth reminiscent of abstract painting. Ranging from dark brown to warm reddish tones, this gradation is something only time can produce. The coexistence of roughness and calm in its texture is a perfect expression of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic. It has a strong presence as a stand-alone object, but it can also hold water, making it highly suitable as a flower vessel. Its solid and tranquil character enhances the beauty of flowers or branches, bringing a deep, distinctly Japanese atmosphere to any space. This piece is a unique work that combines the strength of old ironware with the gentle expression created by the passage of time. Weight: 1.8 kg _________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
