About the Item

This is an antique Japanese ceramic jar covered with paper, believed to have been made during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s). It was most likely crafted for storing tea leaves, with design features that reflect careful consideration for preserving the tea’s aroma and quality. The jar’s most distinctive feature is that its entire surface is covered with paper. This was applied to protect the contents from moisture, a method that reveals both the ingenuity and practicality of the time. The lid is made from Japanese cedar, which is lightweight yet built to seal securely. Over the course of many decades, portions of the paper surface have worn away, creating a unique and beautiful patina. The rich texture and character that have developed through the passage of time are qualities that can only be achieved with age. On the base, there are carved inscriptions. While too old to be fully deciphered, they are likely to indicate the maker’s name and the river from which the clay was sourced. Fortunately, this jar remains in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips. However, it is not watertight, so if you wish to use it as a flower vessel, an inner container should be placed inside. This jar embodies the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi—an appreciation for imperfection and for the beauty brought about by time and change. It holds a quiet, profound charm, making it suitable not only for practical use but also as a decorative accent or an object of art.
