About the Item

This is a Japanese pottery called "Shigaraki ware". Shigaraki is a historical kiln located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. (Shigaraki Kiln is marked with a red circle on the map.) It is said to have originated in the 8th century. In Japan, there are 6 historical kilns that are still in operation. One of them. This item was made around the 15th century. This pot was made in the Muromachi period, which is older than the Edo period. Basically, it is fired without applying glaze, and various colors and expressions are produced depending on the temperature in the kiln, the degree of exposure to the fire, and the conditions such as oxygen. Sometimes the ash from burning firewood pours down and forms a natural glaze. Basically, it is characterized by a reddish brown color. Many Shigaraki ware vases are monochromatic reddish brown or dark brown. However, there are pots that have been baked with various expressions inside. Such vases are very unusual and rare. Exactly this item is a vase with such a rich and beautiful expression. A lot of ash fell and the ash fell off, exposing the white base. The part where the ash remains is thick like an egg shell and becomes a natural glaze. And it's a reddish brown baked color to spread from there. It is impossible to create such a beautiful gradation artificially, and it can be said that it is a work of art created by nature. A jar from the same era is listed in the Shigaraki ware masterpiece catalog. I posted the photo here. I felt that this jar was cooler than the jar in the pictorial record.
