About the Item
This is Takeo Karatsu pottery, believed to have been fired during the Edo period (circa 17th to 19th centuries).
Karatsu ware is traditional Japanese ceramics made in the Karatsu region of Saga Prefecture, and Takeo Karatsu in particular refers to works fired in the area surrounding present-day Takeo City, Saga Prefecture (the area marked with a red circle on the map). The Takeo region is also dotted with small kilns such as Yumino ware, each with its own unique characteristics, producing simple, warm-hearted pottery rooted in the daily lives of the people.
This piece features smooth wheel marks and a thin, brushed layer of white clay, creating a rippling pattern. It is also characterized by a black dripping pattern created by the iron glaze.
This distinctive patterning is unique to this region, and the pottery is still beloved today by Karatsu enthusiasts in Japan.
The iron glaze creates an organic pattern, as if accidentally dripping ink had drawn an animal, making a strong impression on the viewer. This piece is truly a culmination of the "unintentional beauty" born of chance.
Although it is small and fits comfortably in the hand, the overall balance of its shape, including the open rim, taut shoulders, and rounded body, is exquisite, demonstrating the skill of a skilled artisan. It was likely used as a "tokkuri" (sake bottle) at the time, but in modern times it is also recommended for use as a flower vase or other flower container.
We tested it by leaving water in it for over half a day and found no leakage. However, there was a slight odor characteristic of antique pottery, so it may be better suited to use as a flower vase or object for spatial presentation rather than as a practical sake vessel.
Takeo Karatsu vessels in such good condition and compact size rarely come on the market, making them extremely valuable.
This piece was previously owned by a Japanese collector.
Even in modern interiors, its rustic simplicity and abstract iron glaze design will blend beautifully, adding quiet individuality and depth to any space.
