About the Item

This is a very old jar made in Japan, dating from the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The Kamakura period (1185-1333) was a time when a realistic and powerful art style was nurtured along with the rise of the samurai, and in the field of craftsmanship, too, a solid and rugged beauty with an emphasis on practicality is evident. This jar is called a “Tokoname jar,” and is part of the lineage of Tokoname ware, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan. Tokoname ware has been produced mainly in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, since ancient times, and many large jars and pots were produced. In particular, Tokoname ware from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) is characterized by the use of a firing technique that does not use glaze, allowing the texture of the clay and natural baking colors to be expressed as they are. This piece is a true testament to this tradition, and stands out for its “beauty of plainness,” which is completely devoid of any decoration. It is simple and unobtrusive, yet has a unique presence that brings tranquility and weight to the space. The surface reveals the soft expression of long-aged clay, and the beauty of its change over time stands out. It is also worth mentioning that although the vase was made more than 700 years ago, it is still in very good condition with no cracks or major chips. The beautifully shaped mouth also looks very nice when used to arrange flowers or branches. It cannot be filled with water, so please use a water drop when using it. This vase embodies the spirit of “wabi sabi,” or the Japanese aesthetic of “quietness,” and gives us a sense of deep taste and timeless beauty. It is extremely rare to come across a jar this old.
