About the Item
This is a very old ceramic jar made in Japan. It is believed to have been made during the Edo period (1800s–1860s) and was likely used in daily life for storing charcoal. Although it once served a practical purpose, its presence today feels almost sculptural—simple yet profoundly evocative.
What draws the eye most is the dark, smoky coloration that covers its entire surface. This rich black-brown hue resulted naturally from years spent near irori (traditional Japanese sunken hearth) fires, where soot and heat gradually adhered to the clay. It is a landscape that could never be reproduced intentionally. Over time, layers of dust, earth, and oils from human hands accumulated, creating an abstract, painterly texture. Shades of black, gray, and reddish brown blend together as if capturing the passage of time itself.
There is a small crack around the rim, but for a ceramic piece of this age, the condition is remarkably good. The body retains coarse stone particles and the raw, rugged character of the clay, allowing one to sense the vitality of the earth at the moment of firing. There are no large chips or signs of repair—an exceptionally well-preserved example of Edo-period pottery of this scale.
Please note that the jar cannot hold water directly; if you wish to use it for flowers, a liner is recommended. Even a single branch placed inside brings a calming stillness to the space, enhancing the jar’s deep shadows and expressive surface. It also stands beautifully on its own as an art object, harmonizing effortlessly with both minimal interiors and contemporary art displays.
The quiet gravity and stillness that only materials aged over centuries can achieve are fully embodied in this piece. It carries the spirit of wabi-sabi—a distilled expression of Japanese beauty shaped by time itself.
Mouth diameter: approx. 260 mm × 230 mm (oval)
Weight: 9 kg

Our Philosophy
Objects always tell the truth.
All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give
them deep affection as much as I can.
There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty.
But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it
will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing
today and to question us about an essence of beauty again.
I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have,
feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
