About the Item
A refined Japanese cast bronze flower vase by Kitahara Sanka (北原三佳), a noted metalwork artist and member of the Japan Kōgei Association (Nihon Kōgeikai). Active from the late 1950s, Kitahara Sanka is recognized for her work in chūkin (traditional bronze casting), particularly cast bronze flower vases that emphasize material quality and refined surface treatment.
This vase is executed in cast bronze with a subtly textured surface and nuanced patination, characteristic of mid-20th-century Japanese metalwork. Conceived as a single-flower vase (ichirin-zashi), it reflects the restrained aesthetics associated with ikebana and Japanese craft traditions, where form, balance, and surface are paramount.
Kitahara Sanka exhibited her work at major national exhibitions, including the 5th Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition (Nihon Dentō Kōgeiten) in 1958 (Showa 33), confirming her active role in Japan’s postwar traditional crafts movement.
The vase is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), supporting its authenticity and intended artistic context.
