About the Item

Extraordinary large signed Japanese contemporary museum-quality gilded porcelain decorative vase, extremely intricately hand-painted in a breathtaking Kutani Mokubei style set against striking high purity gold background. The artist has used yellow, green, purple and blue in this stunning vase. These are the traditional colors that have adorned Kutani porcelain for centuries. This vase is the last in a series of Mokubei-inspired pieces carrying the “Kutani Tousui” imprint, produced in the In the early 21st century. Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833) was a designer and porcelain artist who was inspired by 17th to 18th century Chinese porcelain and adopted them for Japanese tastes. His nanga designs were copied widely throughout Japan for their exotic content and themes of good fortune and were particularly popular in an age when Japan had almost completely closed its doors to the world. Some Kutani artisans experimented with replacing the traditional deep ocher background of the Mokubei style with pure gold, and only a few achieved the expertise to satisfy their patrons, the Maeda Clan. To maximize luster, artisans settled on 21 karat gold applied with a fine brush to semi-porcelain that absorbs and accentuates the gold. The striking shape of this stunning piece, the remarkable painting with extremely intricate details, the gold background and the dramatic dragon shape gilded decorative handles make this a truly remarkable piece.
