About the Item
A large and vibrant Japanese porcelain vase in the classic rouleau form, crafted in the early 1950s by the Yamatoku kiln in the renowned Arita porcelain region. This striking piece is decorated in the Famille Noire palette, a richly coloured enamel technique that gained popularity in both Chinese and Japanese export porcelain during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The surface is intricately hand-painted with continuous figural and floral scenes, set against a deep jet black glazed ground. On one side, four elegantly dressed geisha figures are shown gathered around a ceremonial table beneath tall banana palms, a tableau symbolic of leisure, grace, and refinement in Japanese visual culture. On the reverse, blossoming cherry trees and brightly coloured peonies climb around a weathered tree trunk—motifs often associated with prosperity and seasonal renewal in Japanese ceramics.
The use of overglaze enamels in pinks, turquoise, celadon green, and mandarin orange evokes the aesthetics of earlier Qing dynasty Famille Noire vases, while the crisp linework and expressive brush detail reflect post-war Japanese production at its most decorative.
Measuring approximately 30 cm in height × 16.5 cm in diameter, this vintage Japanese vase presents beautifully as a statement piece for interior display, whether styled on a console, bookshelf, or as part of a larger porcelain collection. Stamped “Made in Japan” to the base, the mark confirms its mid-century export origin, consistent with Japanese ceramic wares produced for Western markets in the 1950s.
The vase is in very good vintage condition, with only light wear to the base and enamel commensurate with age. A compelling example of mid-20th-century Arita porcelain, blending traditional Japanese themes with bold, export-era colouration.
