About the Item

An exceptional example of traditional Japanese metalwork, this hand-hammered copper vase was crafted by renowned master Takano Ryoichi, a highly respected artisan in the field of Tsuiki Copperware (鎚起銅器). Tsuiki is a centuries-old Japanese technique that involves hammering and raising sheets of copper into elegant forms. Rather than stretching the metal, the craftsman skillfully compacts it through repeated strikes using a variety of custom-made iron rods and hammering tools. This process requires incredible precision, as the copper must be repeatedly softened in a furnace between hammering stages to prevent cracking. The surface of this vase reflects the subtle textures of the handwork and bears a warm, refined patina. The final step of the process—oxidation coloring—imbues the copper with its characteristic deep tone and highlights the individuality of each piece. The result is a vase that blends tradition, technique, and sculptural beauty. This piece is a testament to the mastery of Takano Ryoichi and would make a compelling addition to any collection of Japanese crafts, metals, or minimalist interior decor.
