Extraordinary Japanese 19th century Meiji period museum-quality Koransha porcelain vase (circa 1880,) exhibiting extremely intricate hand-painting in underglaze cobalt blue and polychrome enameling in red and green, and generous gold details. Koransha company was founded by Ezaiemon Fukagawa in 1875 to create exceptional porcelain decorative pieces and tableware for export. The surface of this magnificent vase showcases numerous panels in various sizes depicting extremely intricate floral and geometric patterns. The wide bands in gold decorating the top and base that adds another layer of elegance and beauty to this piece. Two patterns in cobalt blue underglaze decorate the very bottom of the vase creating a beautiful contrast. The inside of the vase is adorned with an intricate and detailed array of traditional chirimen patterns next to each other in a woven pattern, to create a breathtaking surface with a combination of blue underglaze and polychrome that adds another layer of excitement to the scene. A scalloped medallion in iron-red in the center connects the stripes and depicts three graceful cranes in flight, as though mesmerized by this scene. The detailed scalloped rim adds to the elegance of this breathtaking piece. This is a rare piece and the contrast between the inside and outside creates an extraordinary piece to marvel at. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions: H 8 x 8.5 in. The collector of this exquisite pair, who operated one of the leading kilns in Imari-Arita region of Japan, travelled extensively to Europe in the early 1960s with a mission that he led, to purchase and bring back to Japan exquisite antique ceramics that had been exported from Japan to the west over the past 250 years. A total of 104 pieces were acquired and brought back. These were very unique pieces, designed and produced to export to Europe and later to America too, in the 17th up to very early 20th century, mostly in the 18th. These were carefully studied and extensively copied in the hope of creating products that conformed with the long-standing tastes and preferences in the west and bringing back the glory of that era. He concentrated on purchasing massive masterpieces that originated from his region of Imari-Arita. Records show that the mission did a considerable portion of its buying in London. All the 104 pieces have been in his museum-quality private collection. This 19th century Meiji porcelain vase is among these 104 exceptional and unique pieces.
