About the Item

Description: Japanese Satsuma vase dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). The base bears a stamped kanji mark indicating Genzan as the maker. The vase is finely decorated in overglaze enamels and gold on a characteristic cream-colored porcelain body. The painted scene depicts a courtly setting with women and children, rendered in a detailed and narrative manner typical of Meiji-period Satsuma wares produced for both domestic appreciation and export. The dense figural composition and the extensive use of gilt reflect the refined decorative standards of the period. Condition: Good antique condition. Minor wear to gilding and surface consistent with age and careful use. No visible restorations. Collector’s note: Satsuma vessels from the Meiji period bearing identifiable maker’s marks and executed with figural court scenes in enamel and gold are valued for their craftsmanship and historical context within late 19th- and early 20th-century Japanese decorative arts.
