About the Item
An exceptional Art Deco ceramic trumpet vase by Jean Gerbino, crafted in Vallauris, France, circa 1930s. Known for his pioneering approach to neriage ceramics, Gerbino developed a distinct process that combined coloured clays into precise mosaic compositions, without the use of surface glaze. This vase is a perfect example of that technique, revealing both his technical abilities and inventive visual language.
Its flared trumpet form is constructed from thousands of meticulously shaped clay tesserae in tones of Verdigris, earthy taupe, and graphite grey, offset by vivid accents in cobalt, ochre, and rust. Around the upper collar, a continuous frieze of Celtic knotwork and stylised rosettes is built directly into the body—each motif formed through embedded pattern rather than applied decoration.
Balanced on a circular foot and notable for its harmonious lines and surface complexity, the piece reflects the hybrid spirit of 1930s French Art Deco: part traditional craft, part modernist experimentation.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Minor, stable nicks to the inner rim and base edge—subtle and not visually distracting.

Located in Glasgow, GB
An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester
Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery.
The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain.
Standing 26 cm tall with a diameter of 14 cm, the vase is stamped to the base with the Phoenix Ware...
