About the Item

A miniature mosaic ceramic vase by Jean Gerbino, handcrafted in the Vallauris pottery region of southern France during the 1950s. Known for his masterful approach to terre mêlée ceramics, Gerbino pioneered a unique decorative technique combining neriage, mosaïque, and millefiori-inspired surface effects, all composed from precisely cut fragments of coloured clay rather than glaze. The intricate patterning wraps around the vessel’s rounded form in an almost textile-like rhythm—an illusion made possible by the laborious method of assembling minute clay tesserae before shaping and firing. The palette—rich in celadon green, terracotta, ochre, and ultramarine—further enhances the visual depth. Signed “Gerbino Vallauris” to the base in impressed script, this small-scale mid-century French ceramic vase measures approximately 9 cm in height and 7.5 cm in diameter. Condition is very good with only minor signs of age and handling. A collectable example of post-war Vallauris studio pottery, this piece encapsulates the region’s revival and Gerbino’s role as one of its most distinctive ceramic artists.

Art Deco Ceramic Athens Vase by Thomas Forester Sons, England, 1930s
By Thomas Forester Sons
Located in Glasgow, GB
An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery. The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain. Standing 26 cm tall with a diameter of 14 cm, the vase is stamped to the base with the Phoenix Ware...

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta
By Mdina, Michael Harris
Located in Glasgow, GB
A rare signed Mdina Glass vase from Malta, dated 1979, exemplifying the studio’s bold aesthetic during its formative years. This decorative squat bottle vase is worked in the celebrated ‘Ming’ pattern, with swirling bands of turquoise blue and deep green glass layered over a base of sparkling golden ochre. The colours twist upward in irregular spirals around the rotund body, forming a richly tactile surface that captures the light beautifully. This form—low, broad, and full-bodied—is less commonly encountered, particularly in this scale. Measuring 16.5 cm in both height and diameter, it’s a commanding example of vintage Mdina glass...
