About the Item
Fused glass vase features complex multilayered colored glass core in dark Bordeau or burgundy red, toffee brown, cream, and deep cobalt blue colors, encased in clear glass in sommerso technique. Complex layering of colored glass elements adds another layer of complexity and enhances the perceived texture of the vase. Minimal shape of the vase allows the colorful design to take center stage and to guide the along the curvatures and lines of the piece.
This is how the artist describes his approach to creating blown glass pieces: "To manipulate color and light, I use applications of 2 or 3 transparent colors to create pleasing combinations. Colors in glass have properties of both additive and subtractive color systems. Light reflected from the surface of glass, particularly opaque glass, uses a primarily subtractive color system, but light passing through transparent glass becomes malleable. Technically light passing through layers of transparent colors is filtered, but successive layers of filtering create new colors, and layers of light projected on a surface can become additive. Curves in the form can focus or disperse light based on the shape."
The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching in the bottom (Lost Angel 2003). We are offering another vase by Joel O'Dorisio, done in similar technique in 1999 with inclusion of metallic pigments in fused glass elements, in a separate listing; the vases can be used as a paired group in the interior due to similarities in color and style, and would make a great gift to an art glass collector or a design enthusiast.
Joel O'Dorisio's work concentrates on traditional blown glasswork and cast sculptural glass. He earned his BFA from Ohio State University, and went on to earn an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He opened his own studio and gallery, Lost Angel Glass, in Corning, N.Y., in 1998. O’Dorisio began teaching in 2005 and is currently Director of Arts Village Learning community at Bowling Green State University, where he also teaches glass. His work focuses on the interaction between humanity and the natural environment, specifically using natural textures as a metaphor for nature's chaotic beauty. More recent work includes design-based ideas that blend a variety of technical elements and explore the diverse nature of glass as a sculptural material. His work has been exhibited at the Carnegie Center for Arts and History, the Museum of American Glass in New Jersey, and the Toledo Museum of Art. O'Dorisio's work is also in many private, corporate, and museum collections around the world.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
