About the Item

Striking sculptural footed bowl with manipulated rim features rare smokey amethyst color glass encased in clear glass in sommerso technique. The graphic, free-flowing rim creates an organic mood and guides the eye along the piece. The bowl is marked with Bohemia Glass foil sticker of Crystalex/Chribska factories that was in use in 2nd half of 20th century. Its design, a part of pattern range 316 created in 1950s - 1960s, is attributed to Josef Hospodka by multiple veritable printed and online sources, including Czechoslovak Glass Review magazine, 1963. We are offering a similar Chribska Glassworks bowl from the same pattern range, but in blue and deep orange colorway, in a separate listing. Sklarna Chribska was founded in early 15th century and is thought to be one of the oldest glassworks still in operation in Europe. In 1882 it passed into hands of Mayer family, who run it until the Second World War; during 1950s it was absorbed into Borske Sklo, along with Moser and Mstisov. Josef Hospodka, previously a head of the blown glass studio at Umelecke Sklo, was Chribska's chief designer from early 1950s to 1970s. Hospodka was a highly respected designer in Czechoslovakia, and his fluid, organic design style was very successful commercially, with some of his pieces remaining in Chribska's production until the end of 1980s. One of Hospodka's best-known designs is the Chribska glass lamp that won a gold medal at the Brussels World Fair in 1958; he won several awards for his work at Chribska, including a gold medal at the Montreal World's Fair in 1967. His contribution to glass design is considered an important part of Czech cultural heritage.

Michael Shearer Art Deco Amethyst and Clear Vase, California Art Glass, UV Glow
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Art Deco style vase was hand blown in clear glass enclosed in the amethyst glass base. The piece is signed by the artist on both sides of the vase near the bottom with "Michael Shearer 1985". The vase is in good vintage condition; please note a small air bubble inside the clear portion of the glass, that is not a flaw, but a part of hand-blown glass process, and it does not detract from overall beauty and quality of the piece. Amethyst glass part of the vase glows in UV light. Michael Shearer (1946-2021) was an established glass artist who studied art in Costa Mesa College and opened his first studio in Hermosa Beach, California, in 1976; in 1983 he moved the studio to Laguna Niguel...

Nicholson Fused Glass Bowl, 1992, American Art Studio Glass
By Rick Janet Nicholson
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage glass bowl in biomorphic shape was created by Rick and Janet Nickolson in 1992; it features a pair of abstract patterns in pink, cream, and white glass fused on thin, almost transparent green glass background. The green color deepens around the heavier base, creating a contrast with the light, ethereal body of the bowl. The bowl is signed and dated on the base near the bottom. Rick and Janet Nicholson of Nicholson Blown Glass Studio have worked together as a successful team since 1979. Rick first studied glass with Don Hartman and the University of Southern California and was a TA at Pilchuck Glass School for Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach in 1981; he continued to study with such notables as Therman Statom...

Joseph Morel for Zellique Pulled Feather Bowl, American Studio Art Glass, 1988
By Zellique Studio 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass bowl features striking Art Deco style 5-lobed pulled feather decor in blue, purple, and Bordeau red glass, enclosed in clear glass. The center of the bowl has a convex element, adding an Op-Art element to the composition. The design of the bowl is reminiscent of the pulled feather pieces that Morel created while at Orient & Plume, but the choice of semi-transparent and clear glass instead of colored iridescent glass, used in his earlier works, shows a Post Modern influence and a more contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition. The bowl is signed in etching by the artist on the bottom with "Zellique Studio JM 8-1988 FBVI98". Joseph Morel is an established American glass artist, based in California. He began his career in glass artist at California State University, Chico; after graduating in 1973, he worked at Orient & Flume Art Glass, an internationally renowned glass studio, where he was mentored by visiting European glass masters over the next seven years. Orient & Flume early work was directed toward recreating the silver-luster or iridescent glass of turn-of-the-century artists like Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz, for example, Tiffany Cypriote glass and Steuben Aurenes. The company regularly drew in other artists with various skills in working glass, creating learning opportunities for their employees. In 1980, Morel opened Zellique Art Glass in Benicia, California, where he was able to utilize his skills a glass designer. As the American art glass movement grew, other glass studios opened in Bay Area in 1980s - 1990s; in early 2000s there were five glassblowing studios in Benicia: Zellique Art Glass, Lindsay Art Glass, Nourot Glass, Opal, and Smyers Glass...

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Organic Folded Edge Purple Bowl, NY Art Glass
By Thomas Kelly
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Striking Organic Modern bowl in shades of purple was hand blown with fluid, folded edge. The jewel-like amethyst and lavender colored glass inclusions were placed in abstract, graphic pattern on soft lilac background, and enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Minimal, almost monochromatic color palette balances complex shape of the piece, and the subtle flow of the pattern guides the eye along the folded glass surfaces. The bowl is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom. We are offering similarly shaped Vitrix bowls in buttery yellow and amber palettes in separate listings. Thomas Kelly is an established glass artist working in Vitrix Hot Glass...
