Josef Riedel Jeweled and Enameled Jugendstil Glass Vase

About the Item

A rectangular antique art glass vase with beveled edges from the Josef Riedel Glassworks at Polaun, dating circa 1900-1910. The dark green glass vessel was mould-blown and decorated in polished gold work ornament with raised, ivory-colored enamel accents. Each decorative panel bears a central inset glass "jewel" in red or iridescent white mimicking an opal. Two sides are further ornamented with delicate clusters of hand painted blossoms in shades of mauve, purple, and white with golden yellow centers. A series of six golden lines flow down from these floral motifs, terminating in six additional small red cabochon "jewels" forming a Secessionist style design on the front and back of the vessel. The vase is unmarked but the form and Jugendstil decorative scheme is almost certainly the work of the Josef Riedel glassworks. The vase is in very good condition and all the jewels are present. There is some rubbing and loss to the polished gold painted accents and typical scratches are visible on the base. The vessel measures: 10.75 in. H x 3 in. W (at base) x 2.25 in. W (at rim). Colorful European glassware reached the peak of its popularity for export during the last quarter of the 19th century. A number of German and Austro-Hungarian (Bohemian and Czech) glassmakers including Josef Riedel, Moser, Loetz, Harrach, Poschinger, and Kralik decorated their designs with gold work and hand painted enamels, echoing the decor scheme of this vase.
