About the Item

Sculptural glass vase designed by Kai Blomqvist for Oy Kumela, Finland, during the 1970s. The model Kallio is executed in solid mould-blown glass, characterised by its compact proportions and architectural presence. The vase displays Blomqvist’s refined approach to form, where mass and geometry are balanced with subtle surface articulation. The design reflects the Finnish glass tradition of the period, combining functional simplicity with a distinctly modern expression. Its weight and clarity give the piece a strong sculptural quality, allowing it to function equally well as a standalone object or as part of a curated glass grouping. The restrained yet powerful form aligns with late modernist and early brutalist tendencies seen in Nordic glass design of the era. Produced by Kumela, one of Finland’s most important post-war glass manufacturers, known for collaborations with leading designers and for high technical quality. The vase is signed to the underside. A strong example of Finnish studio-influenced production glass from the 1970s.
