About the Item

Kaj Franck is known for his functional, simple designs that are often referred to as the ‘conscience of Finland’, and his products are characterised by their use of colour without any decoration. However, he also left behind a large number of unique glass art pieces that make use of a wide variety of techniques. Filigree glass, which was produced at Nuutajarvi in the late 1850s, was modelled on the techniques of Venetian glass. The technique was discontinued, but Kaj Franck revived it in 1961 after starting work on it in the early 1950s. Nuutajarvi's filigree glass is made by inserting long, thin rods of coloured glass into a wooden mould with a slit in the middle, blowing transparent glass into the mould and fusing it together, and then twisting it. The colour and thickness of the rods of coloured glass, as well as the way they are arranged, are all chosen by Kaj Franck himself. This is a unique piece that combines glass with air bubbles and filigree glass. Like KF212, the base is raised in a mountain shape. Signed ‘Kaj Franck Nuutajarvi Notsjo’

    Wear consistent with age and use. It is difficult to see in the image, but there is a part where the surface is bubbled along the line on the inside of the middle part. This is thought to be from the time of manufacture.

A beautiful and unique hand thrown stoneware vase, with amazing glaze. Made by Toini Muona at Arabia, Finland, 1960s. Excellent condition. Incised signature "TM". Toini Muona (1904-1987) was one of the most respected art ceramists and trendsetters in Finnish ceramic art and art industry in the 1930s–1950s. Her artworks represent clean modern reduced forms and motives taken from finnish nature. Toini Muona studied sketch drawing at the Central School of Fine Arts from 1923 to 1926 and postgraduate ceramics from 1926 to 1923. In the meantime, she worked as a textile designer at Atelier Vigli from 1929 to 1931, then moved to the Arabian Art Department, where she worked until 1970. In the same year, he received the Finnish National Award for Industrial Arts. Toini Muona was a skilled wheel-thrower who, especially early in her career, created vases, jars, and objets d'art influenced by old Chinese ceramics.
