About the Item

A massive late 19th century Meiji Era (1868-1912) bronze Japanese vase. The vase is made of patinated bronze, giving it a rich, reddish-brown color. The decoration style is known as bas-relief, where the Koi figures are raised from the surface of the vase, creating a three-dimensional effect. The Koi fish symbolize good fortune, perseverance, and strength in Japanese culture, often associated with the legend of carp swimming upstream to become dragons This piece is tall and heavy, with raised swirls representing water and five fish of various sizes in high relief on the exterior. It has slightly curved, graceful sides, and a raised lip. It is signed on the side toward the base with a five character mark enclosed in a rectangle. There is a small crack and hole near the base - shown in photo
