About the Item
An exceptional Japanese cloisonné enamel vase from the golden age of the Meiji period, delicately worked in fine silver wire and attributed to the celebrated master Hayashi Kodenji. The vase is decorated with graceful sprays of iris in full bloom, their violet petals and slender green leaves arranged with naturalistic poise against a softly polished ground. The refined use of silver wirework demonstrates the precision and delicacy for which Hayashi was renowned, the wires so fine they appear to dissolve into the enamel surface, lending the composition an almost painterly quality.
Hayashi Kodenji (1831–1915) was among the foremost cloisonné artists of the Meiji era, admired for his ability to harmonize technical innovation with classical Japanese aesthetics. His works, frequently awarded at national and international expositions, are preserved today in major institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Khalili Collection. Floral motifs such as the iris—long a symbol of elegance and seasonal renewal in Japanese art—were a recurring theme in his oeuvre, often celebrated for their clarity of form and depth of color.
Pieces of this refinement, especially those attributed to Kodenji and dating to the high point of Japan’s cloisonné production in the late nineteenth century, are highly sought after by collectors. This vase exemplifies the luminous artistry that captivated Western audiences at World Fairs and continues to command strong interest in today’s market, offering both historical significance and timeless beauty
