About the Item

Large Art Nouveau Ceramic Vase by Danico, Denmark, 1920s Striking large Art Nouveau ceramic vase by Danico, Denmark, dating from the 1920s. This impressive piece is handmade and hand-painted in fine stoneware, featuring a glossy glaze with a light cream background and stylized, organic floral motifs in shades of blue, dark brown, and black, created using the traditional cow horn technique (kohornsteknik). The decoration flows rhythmically around the entire surface, forming a continuous, nature-inspired pattern that evokes the fluid, botanical aesthetic characteristic of the Art Nouveau period, where organic lines and natural forms merge in harmonious movement. The vase has a rounded, voluminous body that gently narrows toward the top, finishing in a circular mouth. Both the rim and base are accented with deep brown borders, framing the design beautifully. Unusually large for a Danico piece — most of the workshop’s monumental works have not survived over the past century — this vase stands out both for its scale and artistic quality. It bears signs of its 100-year history, including small, age-appropriate nicks and glaze imperfections that attest to its century-long history, and a small repair at the junction between the foot and the base (please review all photos for condition and details). Dimensions: Height: 10.63 in (27 cm) Diameter (top): 4.92 in (12.5 cm) Diameter (base): 5.31 in (13.5 cm) About Danico: Danico was a Danish ceramics manufacturer that existed for only ten years (1919–1929) but became a highly recognized and collectible name. The company was founded by potter Niels Peder Nielsen and merchant Carl Corfitzen, and the name Danico combines “DA” (Danmark), “NI” (Nielsen), and “CO” (Corfitzen). The company became known for its distinctive Art Nouveau and early Art Deco designs, characterized by elegant hand-painted motifs, nature-inspired forms, and the use of the cow horn technique, in which colored slip was applied through a fine horn nozzle to create intricate, flowing patterns. Danico’s works are prized by collectors for their refined craftsmanship, historical significance, and their clear reflection of Denmark’s early 20th-century ceramic artistry — deeply rooted in the ideals of beauty, nature, and handcraft.
