About the Item

A highly impressive and unusually large Japanese cloisonné enamel lidded vase, standing 18 inches tall and constructed in three distinct parts comprising the lid, the central body, and the lower base. The composition is richly layered and visually complex, combining powerful dragon imagery amid scrolling cloud bands with delicately rendered peonies and butterflies set against a luminous sky blue ground. The contrast between the soft botanical elements and the dynamic dragon forms creates a balanced and sophisticated design rarely achieved at this scale. The upper register is dominated by finely detailed dragons emerging from dense, shaded cloud scrolls, their sinuous bodies articulated with exceptional precision and subtle tonal variation. Below, the body transitions into an elegant floral tableau, with blooming peonies, leafy branches, and butterflies rendered with painterly sensitivity and refined wirework. The lower base is decorated with dense repeating patterns and stylized foliage motifs, anchoring the composition visually and structurally. The lid is equally elaborate, featuring patterned medallions and cloud scrolls, surmounted by a domed finial that completes the vertical silhouette. The quality of the enameling, the confident wirework, and the ambitious scale strongly suggest the hand of a leading late nineteenth to early twentieth century workshop. This piece can be attributed to the Goto workshop, known for producing some of the most technically accomplished Japanese cloisonné enamels of the Meiji period. Goto works are distinguished by their mastery of shading, complex multi zone compositions, and the seamless integration of figural, floral, and decorative elements across large surfaces, characteristics clearly evident in this vase. Large scale cloisonné lidded vases of this complexity are rare, particularly examples executed in multiple sections with such cohesion of design. This piece would make a commanding centerpiece in any serious collection of Japanese decorative arts or a museum level display. Condition The vase is in mint condition with no damages. The base has small areas of enamel loss in two locations. Please see photos. The lid finial has enamel loss. Please see photos.
