Large 1970s Murano Studio Art Glass Vase – Attributed to AVEM – Rare Twisted-Trail “Scale” Pattern
A spectacular large Murano studio art glass vase from the 1970s–1980s, attributed to AVEM (Arte Vetraria Muranese) or a closely related Venetian atelier of the same period.
Hand-blown with remarkable technical mastery, this sculptural piece (height 35.5 cm / 14 in) showcases an exceptionally rare and complex twisted-trail encased “scale” pattern, created by applying molten glass threads, rotating the body while hot, and fully embedding the motif beneath multiple layers of clear glass.
The result is a dynamic surface of interlocking organic cells — a decorative effect seldom seen and extremely difficult to execute. Warm tones of brown and cream shift subtly through the glass, giving the piece a refined, mid-century palette. The vase is finished with a beautifully polished pontil, thick walls, and a delicately flared rim with a soft blush tint, all characteristic of high-level Murano atelier craftsmanship from the era.
Works of this scale and technical sophistication were produced only in very limited quantities, making surviving examples highly desirable for collectors of Italian studio glass and high-end interior projects. A rare and striking object with strong sculptural presence — ideal as a centrepiece in luxury interiors or curated design collections.
