About the Item
Large Royal Vienna porcelain vase with cover, finely gilt and enameled and featuring a scene after the original painting by Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) entitled Telemachus and the Nymphs of Calypso. 29 inches tall and in very good condition.
The painting depicts a scene from The Adventures of Telemachus, a novel by Francois Fenelon, based on the Greek myth of Odysseus's son, where a young Telemachus on Calypso's island is welcomed by nymphs with fruit and flowers, after he shipwrecked there with his guide, Mentor (the goddess Athena in disguise). The original painting resides in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
