About the Item

An evocative late Victorian spill vase produced in England circa 1890, distinguished by its sculptural bamboo-inspired form. The piece is composed of three vertical tubular stems of graduated height, each modelled as stylised bamboo culms and joined by horizontal nodes, rising from a softly contoured, organic base. The vase appears to be formed in stoneware and finished with a pale, softly lustrous craquelure glaze, exhibiting a fine pattern of crackling throughout. The restrained, naturalistic modelling reflects the late 19th-century fascination with Japonisme and botanical motifs, interpreted here in a distinctly British ceramic idiom. Spill vases of this type were originally intended to hold tapers or wooden spills for lighting fires and candles, typically displayed on a mantelpiece. Today, the form lends itself equally well to use as a bud vase for short-stemmed flowers or as a purely decorative object, where its striking silhouette and subtle surface texture can be fully appreciated.
