About the Item

French Art Nouveau Vase by François-Théodore Legras, Early 1900s – Rare Enamelled Chestnut Leaf Décor A superb and exceptionally rare French Art Nouveau vase by François-Théodore Legras, crafted in France in the early 1900s. This uncommon baluster-like form is richly decorated with finely enamelled chestnut leaves, demonstrating the refined naturalism and artistic precision that define Legras’s most desirable works. Pieces of this rarity and decorative complexity are highly sought after and represent a major find for serious Art Nouveau glass collectors. Dimensions: • Height: 7.7" (19.5 cm) • Diameter: 4.5" (11.5 cm) Signature: Signed “Legras” within the décor (see photo). With its elegant silhouette, exquisite enamel work, and authentic signature, this vase perfectly embodies the poetic botanical aesthetic of early 20th-century French glass. About François-Théodore Legras François-Théodore Legras (1839–1916) is one of the most influential figures in French glassmaking during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally from the Vosges region, he began his career as an apprentice before quickly rising through the ranks to become director of the Saint-Denis glassworks, which under his leadership grew into one of the largest and most innovative French glass manufacturers of its time. Legras became internationally known for his mastery of acid-etched glass, enameled decoration, and richly colored Art Nouveau landscapes. His production ranged from affordable decorative pieces to finely crafted artistic works, many of which are now highly collectible. During the height of the Art Nouveau movement, Legras developed distinctive motifs inspired by nature—trees, leaves, flowers, lakeside landscapes—which remain some of the most iconic examples of French decorative glass from this period. Today, Legras’s works are prized for their artistic quality, technical finesse, and the historical importance of a glassmaker whose influence helped shape the aesthetic of French Art Nouveau.
