About the Item

Rare French Art Deco Enameled Glass Vase by Leune, Paris, circa 1920. Exceptional and very rare French Art Deco glass vase by Leune, produced at 28 bis rue du Cardinal Lemoine, Paris, circa 1920. This highly sculptural gourd-form vase is executed in thick, fully hand-enameled glass and represents one of the most accomplished productions of the Leune workshops during their peak Art Deco period. The decoration features a refined papyrus motif inspired by ancient Egypt, with a striking Egyptian warrior rendered in reserve, a technique requiring exceptional technical control. The rich, layered enameling and strong silhouette reflect the influence of Egyptomania that swept French decorative arts following World War I, while maintaining a distinctly Parisian elegance. The vase is signed “Lenue” (period variant of the Leune signature), as commonly encountered on authentic examples. Models of this quality and complexity are extremely scarce and are considered among the most desirable creations of Leune Art Deco glass. Measurements Height: 7.8 in. (19.8 cm) Width: 6.9 in. (17.5 cm) Depth: 4.75 in. (12 cm) Condition Excellent original condition with vibrant enamels and no restorations. Biography – Leune (Société Anonyme des Établissements Leune) The Société Anonyme des Établissements Leune was founded around 1900 at 28 bis rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris (5th arrondissement) and became one of the most distinctive Parisian glass workshops of the early 20th century. Prior to World War I, Leune specialized in romantically inspired glass decorated with softly enameled landscapes. The firm reached its artistic peak during the 1920s, a defining period for French Art Deco glass. During this time, Paul Daum served as director, strengthening the artistic and technical quality of production. Between 1923 and 1926, Leune employed Auguste-Claude Heiligenstein as artistic designer. Blank glass forms were supplied by Daum Frères and subsequently richly hand-enameled at Leune after Heiligenstein’s designs. This period produced Leune’s most celebrated works: thickly enameled, luxurious Art Deco vases and decorative objects, often featuring classical, exotic, or Egyptian-inspired themes. Leune also produced molded and pressed glass signed “Etaleune,” stylistically close to contemporary productions by Muller Frères. The company ceased operations in the early 1930s, making authentic Leune pieces—especially heavily enameled Art Deco models—rare and highly collectible today.
