About the Item
This unique set of three vessels was designed by Livio Seguso for Bisazza, representing the "Scavo" aesthetic of the 1980s and 1990s. The set comprises a tall vase, a gourd-shaped vase with handles, and a bowl. Each piece is executed in a rare Ruby glass and carries a waving "morisa" bead that highlights the textured surface.
Technique and Context
The Scavo technique saw two decades of popularity, beginning with the "Etruscan" collection by Seguso Vetri d’Arte of Albarelli and Rigattieri. Many companies produced collections at the time—most notably Cenedese and Padovan—the work of Silvio Piattelli stands out as a significant contribution to the period.
The Scavo texture was achieved by adding minerals mixed with sawdust to the hot glass. The process was dramatic to witness; the sawdust would ignite, leaving the minerals deeply bound to the glass surface. Each company utilized its own proprietary formula for this effect.
The use of Ruby glass in Scavo production is exceptionally rare. Historically the most luxury color to produce, Ruby glass requires the addition of gold to the mix. Finding a complete Scavo group in this color is highly unusual.
While other companies remained focused on Classical Roman and Greek models, Livio Seguso’s collection was unique for its inspiration in Native American art, specifically Navajo pottery—a theme that was highly popular in the 1980s.
These pieces were produced during the early 1990s under Bisazza ownership. This allowed Livio Seguso to pursue his artistic career with the creative freedom found in independent practice, a path similar to that of Luciano Vistosi and Lino Tagliapietra.
Bisazza, the luxury mosaic company, continued producing Seguso’s models through the early 1990s before shifting their focus entirely to mosaics. The furnace tradition was subsequently preserved by masters Elio Raffaelli and Roberto Camozzo.

Set of two splendid Pulegoso vase. One round and the other tall. The round is lighter and the tall darker tone of mustard.
Perfectly executed Pulegoso finish. This is Murano Crucible Pulegoso. The mouth has a rim with external gold leaf difficult to notice because it does not contrast with the background. Just magnificent and rare set.
At first I believed, because of the round shape, that Bisazza was dovetailing Carlo Scarpa original round shape from the 1930s. When I was able to see the pieces and see the year, then all came clear. In the second part of the 1980s there was a re-discover in Interior design of the Native American arts. In particular, the Navaho products. As Carlo Scarpa took his inspiration from Japanese shapes, here Bisazza translated in glass the Navaho pottery art. Here the reason for a hearty color, these orange toned Puligoso is part of the Seguso tradition. Colors that are not in high fashion.
This collection belongs to the Livio Seguso production made under Bisazza ownership for a small period of the early 1990s. Livio continued his artist career with the freedom and the free state of mind that came from not owning a company. Similar path of Luciano Vistosi.
Bisazza, the famous luxury mosaic company, continued Seguso models for the first part of the 1990s. Then closed the furnace and continued to focus with his mosaic collection. His masters, Elio Raffaelli...

Unique Murano Glass Vase Stellato in the style Pollio Perelda for Fratelli Toso
By Fratelli Toso
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
Splendid murano mosaic vase with a perfect color combination and complex mosaic technique.
The stellato finish is made by rolling canes of various color over a small blob of incandescent glass. The design is attained by using the glass scissors at the end and making flat discs with a star design. All these are then heated on a flat surface, in the old time was a stone so this technique still carries that name, lavorazione a piera.
It's heated so that it becomes an unique mosaic rectangular piece. It's then rolled with a glass disc that has the exact perimeter of the rectangular side. This makes the name that this technique is internationally known, Roll-up technique. The difficulty is to close into a cylinder the two other sides of the rectangle. After that the cylinder is closed on the opposite end, glowed to ge to the size, changing the working point with the punty technique (a puntello) and handopening to get the final shape.
An incredible sequence of glassmaking technique to get a special design.
The result is an intricate design of stars in an infinitive patchwork of color matching.
This is commonly known as Stellato vase, which was enhanced and studied by Pollio Perelda...
