About the Item
An exquisite and rare early 1960s Italian ceramic vase by the renowned Florentine master of ceramics, Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011). This highly sculptural and artistic piece features an abstract, architectural cityscape design, specifically resembling the iconic cupola and campanile of the Florence Duomo (Santa Maria Del Fiore).
The vase has a distinctive flared, hourglass silhouette. The exterior features an expressive, hand-glazed sgraffito decoration in bold black over a creamy white ground, with accents in a rich, deep red. The technique gives the architectural elements a textured, graphic quality characteristic of Fantoni's mid-century modern style, which blended influences from Cubism and abstract art.
A striking, vibrant turquoise glaze provides a vivid internal contrast to the monochromatic exterior. The piece is signed to the underside with the artist's typical signature, "Fantoni Italy," and likely dates to approximately 1963. Fantoni's work is held in the collections of major international art institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
In excellent vintage condition, consistent with age and use. The approximate dimensions for this style are typically around 18.75" in height and 5" in diameter.
This statement-making collector's piece is a superb example of post-war Italian studio pottery and a testament to Fantoni's innovative approach to ceramic art.
Marchell Fantoni (1915-2011) was born in Florence, Italy and was a designer, sculptor, metal worker and ceramist. His work is well known and exhibited in numerous museums around the world including MoMA New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Art Boston, Museums of Modern Art Tokyo and Kyoto, Victoria and Albert Museum London, Royal Scottish Museum of Edinburgh, International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, National Bargello Museum and Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of the Uffizi in Florence.
