About the Item
Marcello Fantoni Signed Italian Ceramic Vase with Craquelure Glaze, Mid-20th Century
This exceptional ceramic vase, signed on the base with Fantoni’s distinctive mark, exemplifies the artistry of Marcello Fantoni (Italy, 1915–2011), one of the most celebrated Italian ceramists of the 20th century. Fantoni’s works are prized for their sculptural presence and experimental surfaces, and this piece is a superb example of his mastery.
The vase presents an organic, asymmetrical silhouette with a narrow, irregular opening that enhances its sculptural quality. Its surface is adorned with a complex craquelure glaze, blending muted blues, greys, greens, and soft yellows into a marbled effect of remarkable depth. The crackle finish, achieved through Fantoni’s innovative glazing techniques, lends the piece a timeless, aged character while remaining distinctly modernist. Italy, circa 1950s–1960s

Fantoni began to work as a ceramist in 1934, opening his factory in 1936. After the Second World War, he became very successful, and his works are held in some of the world's most important museums (from the USA to Japan).
