About the Item
A mid-century ceramic vase by celebrated Italian designer Marcello Fantoni, showcasing his signature fusion of sculptural form and richly tactile surface treatments. Sided 'Fantoni Italy' on the underside. This 1950s example features an organic, teardrop-shaped body with a narrowed neck, finished in a deep blue volcanic-style glaze with layered mineral-like textures and subtle variegations of green and gold. The rugged, cratered surface embodies Fantoni's experimental approach to glaze chemistry, evoking the look of oxidized metal or ancient earthenware while maintaining a modernist sensibility. Signed on the underside, this work is a strong representation of Fantoni's influential contributions to postwar Italian ceramics and remains highly collectible among mid-century design enthusiasts. Provenance: From the collection of Lorraine Goldberg, a beloved Detroit ceramist. Dimensions: 6.75"h x 4.5"w x 2.5"d. In very good vintage condition. Full condition report available upon request.

Marcello Fantoni
Marcello Fantoni was a Florentine artist who specialized in ceramics. He studied at the Art Institute in Florence, where Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti were his sculpting professors and Gianni Vagnetti was his figurative art professor. Fantoni began to work as a ceramist in 1934, opening his factory in 1936. After the Second World War, he became very successful, and his works are held in some of the world's most important museums (from the USA to Japan).
