About the Item

A very stylish and unusual French mid-century organic sculptural lava glazed vase by renowned ceramicist Marius Bessone (French, 1929-2001). Based in Vallauris, an enclave of some of the finest French artisans including Pablo Picasso, Bessone gained a reputation as one of the iconic figures of 20th century French ceramic design. He was born into ceramics and followed a family tradition producing unique and distinctively styled pieces using his favored combinations of textured glazes combined with colorful abstract patterns. His work was exhibited widely and won numerous awards and today has become increasingly collectable. This earthenware vase is certainly striking both in its design and its large size. It has a distinctive traditional form with a narrow-skirted base and wide trumpet shaped body but then takes a sculptural form around the top with pierced elements and with a cut and split rim which folds over itself with the end being ‘tied’ through one of the pierced holes. The vase is decorated in matt grey lava glazes interspersed with black and brown ‘burnt’ elements. The glaze incorporates unique abstract patterning set in black outline in matt tones of blue, yellow, pink, green and orange with contrasting glossy orange glazed elements. The pattern is on the side from which the vase should be displayed and viewed. In the style of Pol Chambost the vase has a bright yellow glazed finish to the inside. The vase is signed Bessone Vallauris to the base. Provenance: One of a small collection of mid-century French art pottery. Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good overall condition with light wear associated to age and use.
