About the Item

An evocative piece of mid-century Maltese art glass, this Mdina Glass solifleur vase—often referred to as the “Lollipop Vase” or “Cut Ice Vase”—was handblown on the island of Malta in the late 1970s. Its form and colourway embody Mdina’s early studio period, where artisanal experimentation met coastal influence. Executed in the workshop’s signature ‘Sand and Sea’ pattern, the piece features vibrant swathes of amber-yellow and deep marine blue, encased within a thick, clear glass body. The colour is concentrated along a central internal stem that anchors the form, while the outer surface is distinguished by a sharp, polished front facet—creating a prismatic effect that draws light into the core of the piece. This sculptural art glass vase stands 18 cm tall, with a width of 12 cm and depth of 7 cm. The base bears the etched ‘Mdina’ signature. Condition is very good, with light wear commensurate with age. This example reflects the studio’s distinctive visual language, shaped in part by the influence of Michael Harris, who co-founded Mdina Glass in 1968. The interplay of colour, form and optical precision speaks to the workshop’s early ambition to establish Maltese studio glass as an expressive, collectible art form in its own right.

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta
By Mdina, Michael Harris
Located in Glasgow, GB
A rare signed Mdina Glass vase from Malta, dated 1979, exemplifying the studio’s bold aesthetic during its formative years. This decorative squat bottle vase is worked in the celebrated ‘Ming’ pattern, with swirling bands of turquoise blue and deep green glass layered over a base of sparkling golden ochre. The colours twist upward in irregular spirals around the rotund body, forming a richly tactile surface that captures the light beautifully. This form—low, broad, and full-bodied—is less commonly encountered, particularly in this scale. Measuring 16.5 cm in both height and diameter, it’s a commanding example of vintage Mdina glass...
