About the Item

A matching pair of Meiji-period Japanese gourd-shaped vases, handcrafted in Kutani toward the end of the 19th century. These vases feature exceptional decoration, with intricate designs hand-painted in gold over a rich red porcelain glaze. Delicate brushstrokes depict symbolic Japanese motifs encircling a cartouche that frames a figural Japanese scene. Both vases are hand-signed on their undersides 'Dai Nippon Kutani Tsukuru' Each vase measures 33 cm in height with a diameter of 15 cm. The condition is good for their age, with some fading to the gold detailing. One vase has a small chip on the outer lip—please refer to the images for details.
