About the Item

Ceramic vase designed by Angelo Mangiarotti and produced by Fratelli Brambilla, 1960. Biography The Italian architect, sculptor and designer Angelo Mangiarotti is still esteemed for his refined and controlled approach to materials. He was born in Milan in 1921 and after graduating in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1948 he moved to the United States. Here he worked as a visiting professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and established relationships with famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), Walter Gropius (1883-1969), Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), and Konrad Wachsmann (1901-1980), who would influence his work immensely. From 1963 to 1990 Mangiarotti taught in numerous illustrious design and architecture schools in Italy and abroad. In 1989 he founded Mangiarotti Associates, based in Tokyo. From 1989 to 1992 he was creative director at the Colle Cristalleria company. In addition to his numerous architectural feats, Mangiarotti's portfolio includes a wide range of creative projects - including sculptures such as Cono-cielo (1987), and products such as Fratelli Brambilla Ashtrays (1968) - demonstrating his modern ability to handle traditional materials such as glass and marble. Its designs were produced by the most important companies of its time, such as Artemide, Bernini, Cappellini, Knoll, and above all Skipper, which produced Incas Table (1978), Estral Shelving System (1981), Chicago Chair (1983), and Central Table (1985), During his career Mangiarotti won numerous awards for both design and architecture, such as the Domus Formica Award (1956), the Prix Européen de la Construction Métallique (1979), a Compasso d'Oro for lifetime achievement (1994), and the Marble Architectural Award (1994, 2007). His work has been exhibited in many exhibitions and museums worldwide, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Milan Triennale, and the Gallery MA in Tokyo. In 2012 Mangiarotti died in Milan at the age of 91. His daughter, Anna Mangiarotti (born 1950), teaches architectural technology at the Polytechnic and collaborates with Vistosi to produce her father's designs and his own. Since 2010, Agape Casa has licensed the production of Mangiarotti's most beloved designs.
