Mid-Century Italian Terracotta Vase, Etruscan-Inspired, circa 1950s
A very elegant and strikingly beautiful mid-century Italian terracotta vase, distinguished by its rich, chamotte-like surface in a deep dark chocolate brown. The exterior is enhanced with a satin-finish sgrafitto-style decorative glazing in an antique ochre yellow, creating a subtle yet highly sophisticated contrast.
The overall aesthetic is strongly evocative of ancient Etruscan forms, with an earthy, archaeological presence that reflects the postwar Italian fascination with classical and primitive design languages. The piece is handmade and marked on the base “Italy 036.”
Based on stylistic characteristics, materials, and glazing technique, this vase is very likely attributable to Bitossi, or closely aligned with the production of notable mid-century Italian ceramic studios such as the Zaccagnini family workshops or Fratelli Fanciullacci. Italy, circa 1950s.
