About the Item
This stunning art glass vase was designed by Willy Johansson (1921 - 1993) for Hadeland Glassverk, Norway. It is smooth to the touch, but the appearance looks heavily textured with ribs and bubbles trapped in the glass. From the Atlantic series, this vase has a cylindrical fluted shape in heavy lead crystal clear glass with deep ribbed sides and internal bubbles in the lower half of the vase. Finely flat ground and highly polished top with an overhang-style lip, this art-glass has a nice modernist flair. The vase is signed on the underside and reads Hadeland - WJ.
Measurements: 4.75 in diameter (12 cm) by 10 in high (25.5 cm).
Reference: Willy Johansson (1921- 1993) was a Norwegian glassware designer. Between 1939 and 1942, he studied at Statens Handvaerks -og Kunstindustriskole in Oslo. His father was at the Hadelands Glassverk, Jevnaker, where Johansson joined the glassmaking workshop in 1936. He was best known for the white rim on his clear or smoked glassware.
The Johanssons contributed significantly to expanding the range and improving the quality of Hadelands's tableware. He designed mass production as well as one-off wares. From 1942-45, he worked in the sand blowing section at Hadelands under sculptor Staale Kyllingstad; from 1945-47, in the engraving workshop of Christiania Glasmagasin and at the night school of Statens Handvaerks-og Kunstindustriskole.
From 1947, he was head of the design team, production, and art wares at Hadelands. Received the diploma of honor in 1954 (X), a gold medal in 1957 (XI), and a silver medal in 1960 (XII) Triennale di Milano.
