About the Item

For any lover of Patrick Nagel, art or lover of collectible, modern glass, this is the perfect piece for you. We found this piece at an estate in Indian Wells, California that had one room dedicated to a collection of amazing art glass. Each piece was displayed in a custom wall of built-ins to perfectly fit each work of art. We cannot find any info on the artist of this piece, however, it is done with extreme craftsmanship and an artistic vision. The name of the artist is etched on the bottom of the vase. It appears to be Rové, Ravé or Revé. The front of the vase is inspired by a famous Nagel image of a seated woman. The back is equally detailed, but with a modern geometric starburst pattern. Please note that both designs were all completely deep etched by hand. We have never seen a piece of etched art glass, cut this deep. It is so incredibly hard to do! We think it would look amazing displayed with the Patrick Nagel silk screen hung behind this beautiful piece of art on a black pedestal! Can be hand delivered to Los Angeles for $100. Patrick Nagel: Bio Patrick Nagel was an American artist born in Ohio in 1945 who is best known for his stylized illustrations of women, which became iconic of the 1980s aesthetic, and for the cover art for Duran Duran's Rio album. After serving in the Vietnam War, he studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and California State University, Fullerton, and became a prominent commercial illustrator for magazines like Playboy and companies such as IBM. His work, which blended influences from Art Deco and Japanese woodblock prints, was characterized by bold lines, flat colors, and a minimalist approach that continues to be influential and sought after by collectors. Career and influences Early life and education: Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1945, Nagel spent most of his life in the Los Angeles area. After serving in Vietnam, he attended the Chouinard Art Institute and received a BFA in 1969 from California State University, Fullerton, where he studied painting and graphic design. Commercial art: He began his career as a freelance artist, creating advertisements for major corporations and magazines, including Playboy, Architectural Digest, Rolling Stone, and Universal Studios. Playboy and the "Nagel Woman": His association with Playboy magazine, which began in 1976, significantly increased his popularity and helped define the "Nagel Woman" – an elegant, alluring, yet independent female figure with black hair and white skin. Artistic style: Nagel was inspired by the Art Deco movement, as well as Japanese woodblock prints, which influenced his use of color and simplified forms. He worked from photographs, reducing images to their essential elements of line and color to create his signature minimalist aesthetic. Key works and recognition Duran Duran's Rio: His 1982 cover art for the album Rio is one of his most famous works and is considered one of the greatest album covers of all time. Posters: He created numerous posters, many through Mirage Editions, which were widely collected and further popularized his style. Other commercial work: He created a wide range of commercial art, including illustrations for IBM, ITT, and United Artists, as well as portraits of celebrities like Joan Collins. Legacy: Although his life was cut short in 1984 at the age of 38, his work's influence has endured, impacting everything from graphic novels to music videos like Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and Rob Lowe's Moonbeam City.
