About the Item
An exceptional, carved bas relief vase by Allan Ebeling for Steninge Keramik in Sweden, this piece depicts a frieze-like procession of six, nude African women carrying everything from a baby to a fish. Each figure is wonderfully captured, and the repetition of one figure following another is varied, with great humor, by the burdens they carry. The semi-opaque, ivory-hued glaze lets the hue of the red clay come through, especially at the edges of each figure. Ebeling worked at Steninge in the late 1930s, and is also known for public monuments such as the "Tors bockar" sculpture installed in one of the canals in Torshälla, Sweden.
