About the Item
In the 1930s, Sweden was the world's epicenter for the production of high quality, engraved glass pieces in the Art Deco manner, well illustrated by this vase depicting a nude male figure playing the harp. It was made by Nils and Åke Kjellander, brothers and fourth generation engravers, and was clearly influenced by the nude divers and harpists of Vicke Lindstrand at Orrefors. Although Orrefors was larger and more renowned, an array of smaller firms also produced engraved glass. The Kjellanders' father, grandfather, and great-grandfather began as engravers at Kosta Glassworks before starting their own firm, purchasing thick-walled glass blanks and then adding their engraved designs, from 1924 until 1983. The piece is signed on the bottom.
