Materials: earthenware, ceramic, pigments, glaze.
Core is a series of flat vessels inspired by Prehistoric African building techniques. Willem has been fascinated by vessels, because they have such a clear and easy function; hold and transport water. It also was a canvas for humanity to express themselves. In ancient times, every tribe had their own specific shape in vessels.
In a research of expressing himself through a new material, he found a Challenge by developing a new form language. Because in Willems opinion, a lot of design is missing this freedom of expressing nowadays.
All the pieces can change with the glazing.
Willem calls the making naive and simple, “I think real ceramists will say it’s not a proper technique”, but the result keeps surprising him and that is what he is looking for. By not claiming to be a master in ceramics is not hindered by rules or dogmas. This attitude combined with a hunger for discovering new ideas has led to the flat vessel collection. By transforming a vessel that has always been shaped round and three-dimensional into a flat version resulted in a new archetype. Every vessel is thinner than 10 cm, and made out of two thick flat pieces of clay. The chamber that contains the water is placed in the middle of every vessel and gives them the balance they need. The vessels become even more stable when they are filled with water and this gives Willem the freedom to create surprisingly shapes.
Willem Van Hooff is a designer based in Eindhoven.
He is a driven builder, were he likes to see design as his tool to express and remember stories.
He is fascinated how objects, buildings or traditions can capture stories.
His stories always comes from my interest in history, the start of all his design projects. He likes to work with these old stories, techniques, cultures and give them new life in contemporary products.
He feels the need to bring more freedom and joy back in making.
He thinks this is lacking a certain form of imperfection, joy and traditions. Which
are not based on our consumerism world.

Galerie Philia
Galerie Philia is an international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery representing emerging and established designers and artists. The gallery is the brainchild of two brothers who share a lifetime passion for art, literature and philosophy. Their distinct academic background sets them apart from their peers, as it sees them following a rhizomatic and transcultural approach in the way they select works. This involves combining elements from multiple cultures in what becomes a network of harmoniously interconnected roots, ultimately revealing the beauty of each unique creation. The gallery’s non-hierarchical curation sits apart from the ephemerality of trends and focuses instead on the true aesthetic quality of the piece – alluring and timeless. Unlike others, Galerie Philia does not focus on a single style – whether minimalist, organic or raw – but rather embraces heterogeneity. The Galerie Philia takes pride in discovering new talents, providing them with multiple international platforms to showcase their latest creations. As well as propelling the newest generation of 21st century collectible design, Galerie Philia also works with internationally known design artists. Galerie Philia has a strong international presence, with galleries in Geneva, New York and Singapore. In addition to their permanent spaces, the gallery organizes temporary group exhibitions and artists residencies in first-class locations around the world.
