About the Item

Large iconic cased glass Gulvvase designed by Otto Brauer and made in Denmark by Holmegaard. This vase is the medium size and has a red exterior with a white interior. The last picture shows it with a Swedish Argenta vase that is also for sale in a separate listing. About the designer: Otto Brauer (1911–1984) was one of the leading Danish glass designers of the 20th century. He is best known for his days at the Holmegaard glassworks in the 1940s–1970s. Mr. Brauer is represented at numerous museums in the Nordic countries. He started his career in the Danish glass industry at only 14 years of age and is today most known for his ”Gulvvase” (Floor Vase) series for the Holmegaard company. These vases were designed in 1962 with a bottle shape and pop-era colors. During the first years, the bottles were not cased and were made with only one color glass: olive green, brown, dark blue, and white. In 1970, they were launched with a white inner layer and a colored outer layer: red, ruby red, turquoise, green, olive green, and yellow. The vases today are often accompanied with a contrasting colored ball on top. These balls were actually designed by Michael Bang but crafted at the same glassworks as the bottles.
