About the Item

Hand-painted ceramic pitcher, made by Bruno Gambone in the 1970s Ø cm 20 h cm 17 Bruno Gambone (1936-2021) was an influential Italian ceramicist and artist, widely recognized for his significant contributions to traditional and contemporary ceramics. Born in Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno, he came from a family of prominent artists, being the son of Guido Gambone, one of the leading Italian ceramists of the mid-20th century. Gambone's artistic journey began at a young age, learning the art of ceramics in his father's workshop in Florence at age 14. However, he was determined to chart his own path, exploring other artistic paths such as fabric decoration and painting. His first painting exhibition was held in Florence in 1959. A crucial period in his development was his stay in New York City, from 1963 to 1968, where he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene, interacting with such renowned artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. This experience broadened his horizons in painting, sculpture, film and theater. Upon his return to Italy in 1968, he settled in Milan, where he came into contact with contemporary artists such as Enrico Castellani, Lucio Fontana and Paolo Scheggi. In 1969, after the death of his father, Gambone returned to Florence to run the family ceramics studio. While deeply rooted in ceramics, Gambone maintained an experimental approach, incorporating his experiences in painting and other art forms into his ceramic works. His works often show a departure from his father's more exuberant style, characterized by more linear forms, simpler decorations, and muted tones influenced by the minimalist art of the 1960s and 1970s. He also explored other applied arts, including glass and jewelry design. Bruno Gambone was a member of the National Ceramic Council and the Geneva Academy and served for a decade as president of ASNART (Italian Association of Artistic Craftsmen), later becoming its Honorary President. In 1997 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Italian Ceramic Prize in Vietri sul Mare. His works have been widely exhibited, including at prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale (1972) and the XV Milan Triennale (1973). Gambone's ceramics are highly sought after and considered collectible works of art internationally. He passed away in Florence in 2021.
