About the Item

This pair of blue and white Royal Worcester 'Japonism' vases dates to circa 1862. They are square and intricately decorated in blue with cranes beneath towering bamboo. The blue decoration features a raised surface, enhancing the visual interest of the scenes. The sides feature blue lion dog masks and ring handles. The underside of each vase shows the Royal Worcester impressed mark of the period. In both Western and Eastern societies, cranes have long been celebrated as a symbol of life and joy. Greek and Roman myths often portrayed the dance of cranes as a celebration of life. Throughout Asia, the crane is a symbol of happiness and eternal youth.
