About the Item

France, probably Saint-Louis or Baccarat. Blown white opaline glass of luminous, even body color, each tall cylindrical vase rising to a flared, everted lip finished with an applied cobalt blue ring edged in fine matte gilding. The sides encircled by a continuous, high-relief amber-glass trailing of ivy—hand-formed leaves and tendrils with subtle modeling and gilt-picked veining—applied in a sinuous spiral that varies between the two, underscoring handwork. Narrow gilt fillets accent the shoulder and foot; bases with ground, slightly concave pontils. An archetypal Second-Empire opaline treatment marrying brilliant cobalt, warm amber appliqué, and restrained gilding in a refined, architectonic silhouette. Very finely detailed gilding to vine surfaces commensurate with the work of Baccarat. Measurements: 7.75 in h x 3 in w.
