Cloisonné (pronounced "cloi-so-nay") is an ancient and complex decorative technique commonly used for metalworking.
The term comes from the French word cloisons, meaning "dividers" or "compartments." Thin strips of metal, wires (originally gold or silver, now often copper or brass), are soldered or attached to the surface of a metal object. These strips are folded to form the outline of a design, creating small compartments or cells. These compartments are then filled with colored material.
Historically, this material often consisted of cut gemstones, glass, or other inlays. In later centuries and modern practice, compartments are filled with vitreous enamel (a paste made from glass powder). The object is repeatedly fired in a kiln to melt and harden the glaze. After firing, the surface is smoothed and often polished, leaving visible the metal wires that outline the design.
The cloisonné technique originated in the ancient Near East and spread to many cultures: it dates back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt (before 1800 BC). The earliest examples of enamel and wire were found in Mycenaean tombs in Cyprus (13th century B.C.). The technique arrived in China (known as Jingtai Lan, or "Blue Jingtai") around the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) and reached its peak during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. Chinese cloisonné often features bright colors and intricate designs on decorative objects such as vases and incense burners.

Paired Chinese Vases Cloisonne, 1960s
Located in Bastogne, BE
Cloisonne is a technique for creating cloisonné enamel on metal objects. The name of the technique appeared in France and comes from the word "cloisonné" (cloisonne), which translates as "separated by a partition."
The process of making cloisonne enamels is very laborious. To begin with, a metal base is prepared, which is ground. Then gold and silver wire or thin plates are soldered onto it, and the resulting recesses are filled with special colored vitreous enamel and fired in a kiln. After the product has cooled, it is polished to give shine.
Gorgeous black vases with floral print made in the Cloisone technique in the first half of the 20th century.
They will not leave anyone indifferent.
Handmade antique vases will serve as an excellent gift for a connoisseur of art.
